Well, here we are, citizens of the future. Our planet's greatest minds have had to band together and openly, prominently state that artificial intelligence shouldn't be used for warfare. That's where we're at.

According to The Guardian UK, the mental magnificence of Stephen Hawking, Elon Musk, Steve Wozniak, and 1,000 other giants of AI and robotics genius have called for a ban on "offensive autonomous weapons." Current events have compelled them to proactively prohibit a possible "military artificial intelligence arms race."
In an open letter presented at the International Joint Conference on Artificial Intelligence in Buenos Aires, the creators of current dream-machines warned that while self-aware robots on the battlefield could save military lives, the ease with which they could be sent into action could ultimately create a higher possible civilian casualty toll. Without the difficulty of, say, nuclear fusion to prohibit problematic engagements, certain adversaries could be rash in their deployment of deep-"thinking" devices.

The letter is specific in its statements:
“AI technology has reached a point where the deployment of [autonomous weapons] is – practically if not legally – feasible within years, not decades, and the stakes are high: autonomous weapons have been described as the third revolution in warfare, after gunpowder and nuclear arms...
The endpoint of this technological trajectory is obvious: autonomous weapons will become the Kalashnikovs of tomorrow. The key question for humanity today is whether to start a global AI arms race or to prevent it from starting.”
While certain creators like Wozniak feel that AI-enabled robots could eventually be looked on as entities similar to a "family pet", others (such as Musk and Hawking) consider advanced AI "our biggest existential threat."

Meanwhile, groups like the Campaign To Stop Killer Robots have actively been condemning the rise of AI weaponry for some time, and have taken steps to ensure that the public is aware of the discussions being held on the matter during the yearly Convention On Conventional Weapons conference.
If we can already have robots run a hotel, they can probably run a battle plan. If we already have lasers mounted on planes, it's not a large leap to assume they could soon be cruising on autonomous drones. It's time to pull the plug on these battle-bots before humanity has go deal with yet another persistent problem of our own creation...murderous robots would work a lot more quickly and viciously than pollution or global warming.
